Set a wedding cake budget

At the top of our wedding cake checklist is the budget. Before getting too excited, set a budget first for your cake. Knowing the number that you can spend on your cake will help you work around your price range. This way, you wouldn’t be wasting time dealing with bakers that you cannot afford and focus on the vendors within your means.

Decide on the design and style

One of the fun ways to incorporate a theme is in your wedding cake. Match the overall look of your wedding with the style of your cake. You can play around with the colors and design of your cake based on the motif, the venue, or even your wedding dress. It’s also up to you if you want a minimalist or a grand, complicated cake.

Think about the cake size

The more guests you have, the bigger cake you’ll need. But if your guest list is way too long, you can ask to have smaller serving sizes for your cake. On top of that, you may choose to supplement your cake with some cupcakes or other goodies.

Get baker referrals

Next on our wedding cake checklist is getting that baker referral. Ask friends and family if they know someone who makes an amazing and delicious wedding cake. Check their website and see if it’s a match. If you found some that tickle your fancy, call them and see if they’re available and can work around your budget. Lastly, don’t forget to book them three to six months before the wedding.

Have a cake tasting

One of the most anticipated parts of wedding planning is wedding cake tasting. Why? Well, for obvious reasons! This is the time that you’ll get to sample different cake flavors and fillings. From there, you can pick the combo you love the most. Just remember that the more complicated the combo is, the more expensive it is. Also, fondant icing is generally more expensive than buttercream.

Decide on a topper

Your cake is the centerpiece of your reception. So, choose a cake topper that’s not cliche. Instead, pick something that’s original and is significant to you and your spouse-to-be. But if you’re not so keen on a topper then ditch it. Some cake designs look amazing without any topper at all.

Sign a contract

Now that you have your perfect cake, discuss the delivery details with your baker. Double-check the specifics of your cake such as the flavor and the filling. Once everything is all good in your wedding cake checklist, then you can seal the deal by signing a contract.
